How to Harvest Liquid Nitroge

Have you ever wondered how liquid nitrogen is made? This super-cold substance, with a boiling point of -196°C (-321°F), isn’t mined or found in nature in liquid form — it’s carefully extracted from the air around us!

Air is made up of about 78% nitrogen. To isolate it, scientists use a process called fractional distillation. First, air is cleaned and compressed. Then, it’s cooled down until it becomes a liquid. Different gases boil at different temperatures, so by slowly warming the liquid air, nitrogen can be separated and collected as it boils off first.

The result is liquid nitrogen — a fascinating, icy-cold substance used in science experiments, medicine, food freezing, and even in our Liquid Nitro 7 Lab shows to amaze kids and adults alike!

Want to see it in action? Come to one of our cryo shows — science works wonders!
